BEFORE & AFTER: Retaining Wall & Landscape Transformation in Central City, KY
A young family in Central City, KY moved into a newly built home with a yard that still needed major work, including steep grade changes, poor soil, no established grass, and no finished landscape structure. Perfection Lawn & Landscape created a 3D landscape design first, then installed retaining walls, drainage improvements, planting beds, decorative stone, drip irrigation, and a full lawn renovation so the property felt complete, usable, and built to grow in over time.
What Wasn’t Working
At the start, the home itself was new, but the yard still felt like a construction site. The grade dropped sharply in key areas, the soil was difficult to work with, and there was no established lawn to soften the property or protect bare ground from washout.
The homeowner needed more than a basic planting refresh. The site needed structural support, better drainage, clean definition around the home and mailbox, and a plan that made the outdoor space feel intentional from the street to the basement exit.
Our Approach
The first step was design. Perfection Lawn & Landscape built a full 3D landscape plan so the homeowner could see how the walls, beds, drainage, stone, and plantings would work together before installation began.
The plan solved the grade issues first, then layered in long-term protection and visual detail. Retaining walls created cleaner transitions, drainage work moved water away from vulnerable areas, and the planting and stone package gave the home a finished look without making the yard harder to maintain.

Planning the Grade First
This view helps show how Perfection Lawn & Landscape planned the retaining walls around the home’s slope before installation began. The layout gave the yard cleaner transitions while helping the finished space feel more stable, structured, and usable.

Drainage Built Into the Design
The design also accounted for water movement before any stone or plants were installed. By planning drainage with the walls and beds, the project helped protect the property while keeping the finished landscape clean and intentional.

A Finished, Low-Maintenance Look
Once the functional pieces were mapped out, the design layered in decorative stone, defined beds, and plantings to soften the hardscape. The result was a landscape plan that looked complete without adding unnecessary upkeep for the homeowner.
Step-by-Step Overview
Site Prep & Walls
Prepared the property by addressing unwanted vegetation, rough grading, poor soil areas, and equipment access needs. We installed Keystone Legacy Block and Cap in Adobe Blend for the main wall and the basement exit wall.
Drainage & Planting Beds
Re-leveled key yard areas and improved gutter drainage so water would be better directed around the new landscape. Built planting areas with fabric, Large Autumn Blend rock, drip irrigation, hydrangeas, boxwoods, butterfly bush, holly, nandina, grasses, liriope, and coreopsis.
Lawn Renovation
Finished the lawn renovation with fresh topsoil, seeding, and straw erosion control netting across the lot.
What Changed
In 9 installation days, the property changed from an unfinished lot into a clean, layered landscape with structure from multiple angles. The retaining walls made the grade feel controlled instead of abrupt, while the planting beds added detail at the foundation, mailbox, and high-visibility areas.Project Outcomes
Stronger Support for the Slope
The retaining walls now manage the severe grade changes and give the property a stronger layout.
Cleaner Beds With Built-In Irrigation
Decorative stone, landscape fabric, and drip irrigation make the planting areas cleaner and easier to maintain.
A Better Foundation for the Lawn
The reseeded lawn and erosion-control netting gave the family a stronger foundation for a healthier, more usable yard.
9 DAYS
This new-build yard went from bare soil and steep grade changes to a cleaner, more usable landscape with walls, drainage, stone beds, irrigation, and fresh seed.
